What is the acorn hike?

The Acorn Hike is a two day, one night hiking competition for Scouts and Explorer Scouts local to Eastbourne District. Teams of 4/5 will hike unaccompanied, using navigational skills and teamwork to complete the hike each day. Please see the guidance notes for this years’ distances.

During the hike, there will be checkpoints for teams to complete a variety of tasks where they can gain points. They will also have a chance to rest and fill up water. In the evening, they will cook their own lightweight meal, pitch their tents and be marked on their camping skills. They will then set off the next morning for day two.

There are three different levels of hike; Junior, Senior and Explorer Hike, with the opportunity for older scouts to take part in the full-kit Explorer hike if they wish.

The weekend ends with a presentation ceremony to congratulate all the teams, totting up the scores from hiking, teamwork, checkpoints and camping skills over the duration. It’s a great opportunity for challenge, fun and a sense of achievement year in year out.

Please submit your team entry forms as soon as possible. The final deadline for forms and money is ********* 2024, with an early bird discount until ******** 2024. Any entries / money sent after this date may not be accepted so don’t miss out!

**NEW – Leaders – Scouts / Explorer Sections outside of Eastbourne**

After the initial ‘early bird’ entry is closed for Eastbourne teams, we will also open up to Scout and Explorer Teams across East Sussex for the first time in several years. Please note that entries outside of Eastbourne District will not be accepted until ******** 2024 and the deadline will be ******** 2024.

Safety Briefing


All hike participants must have an online participant form completed before the event. To ensure that data is as up to date as possible, these will be available on the ‘Forms’ menu from ******* 2024. The participant form must be filled in and received no later than ********** 2024.

Please make sure that you put the correct troop / unit name so that we can let leaders know that their teams have all completed their forms.

Please be guided by your leaders when it comes to the kit list, as most troops / units will supply some of the group kit.

The Acorn Hike is run by volunteers, and the success of the event is dependent on a large crew of helpers. We are still looking for a wide range of volunteers for the event, such as:

  • Helping on checkpoints
  • Car park monitors
  • Walkers
  • Camp co-ordinators
  • Check in / check out
  • Twilight volunteers

It doesn’t matter whether you are a leader or parent, and you can be linked to any section – if you have a Scout DBS or are happy to get one to help out, please fill out our survey here – travel expenses can be claimed and we can bring the hot drinks and biscuits!
